It’s almost Easter and when I think of bunnies, I think Disney bunnies. Judy Hopps is the newest Disney bunny on the scene and I decided I want to make a cake that looks like her. I am a novice cake decorator, have only decorated 2 other cakes, and making this Judy Hopps cake is not too hard. I also used a box cake for the cake part and am sharing my secrets with you on how to make a boxed cake taste homemade.
Judy Hopps Cake
Kitchen Tools Needed:
- Buttercream Forsting (recipe here)
- Boxed Cake Mix plus whatever is needed per package instructions.
- Food coloring: Pink, Black, Blue, Purple
I frosted the cake on a sheet pan. I used a French Vanilla boxed cake mix, see below on how I made this boxed caked taste homemade.
One thing I realized with the cake pan is that the ears are almost stuck together. so the first thing I did was cut out a small portion between the ears. Of course, I didn’t figure it out until I filled in the center of the ears. You should do it before you do the ears.
I used the star tips to fill in the center of the ears with the pink frosting. It took me a little bit to get the rhythm of it. It is a down and up motion with slight pressure.

Next, I outlined her eyebrows and eyes with black icing. Her eyes are not round like the cake pans, but more gumdrop-shaped. To smooth the lines I dipped my finger in water and ran my finger over the frosting, it helps takes out the bumps.
Next, I drew her nose and mouth with the pink. Her nose is heart shaped and she smiles. Her eyes are blue and/or purpleish depending on what pictures you are looking at. I got more of a blue color when I mixed purple and blue food colorings. I filled in the white of the eyes and gave Judy white light sparkles in her iris’.
Filling in the fur was a bit tedious, but I do like the effect the grass tip had. It took an hour or so since I am a beginner. I think it came out pretty good and I hope you enjoy it.
How to Make a Boxed Cake Taste Homemade
Though I love making a cake from scratch, I don’t always have time for that or the ingredients. Thankfully, making a boxed cake taste homemade just requires things you probably already have in your fridge or pantry. Here are several ways to take a boxed cake to a new level. You can do one or all of these and your cake will taste amazing!
- Replace the water with milk.
- Replace the oil with melted butter.
- Add 1 tsp. vanilla
- Add an extra egg yolk
