I am sure most of us 30 and 20 something people know the name James Brown. You know some of his songs and know that he is the Godfather of Soul. Do you really know the man and how he grew to be the legend that he is today? Get On Up is a great movie that takes a look into the character and development of James Brown. Great music, acting, and story makes this movie really good.
The music in the movie is great, but James Brown songs are already great. You will hear all of your favorite James Brown songs in this movie. The movie explains a little about his his funky sound was developed. He was revolutionary in what he did with music. Sometimes, even his own band members had no clue what he was doing. James Brown was headstrong and smart and knew how to grow his name and brand.
The acting in the film was really good. The way the story was laid out was a little confusing at first. The story flipped back and forth from child, adult, teen and mixed them all up. I would have liked a little more young James Brown insight, but I would have to say enough was given to know that James Brown was always responsible for himself and ran things his way. Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis do a wonderful job, but the star of the film had to be Chadwick Boseman who played James Brown. He acting was genius! I wonder how long it took him to learn how to talk like James Brown.
This movie had some humor, some sad parts (not strong enough to make me tear up), and some education. You will learn so much about James Brown and get a new appreciation for him. I give this movie 4/5 stars!
